Summer sun and summer fun are finally here! That means it’s time to sign up for Summer Reading at the Idaho Falls Library. Don’t let summer slide get the best of you or your kids. This program is free, the prizes are great, and the books are amazing!
Junior Summer Reading
Kids! Sign up for the Idaho Falls Public Library’s 2017 Summer Reading program starting June 5, 2017! Sign up at the children’s desk on the first floor of the library. Summer reading ends on August 25.
What is Summer Reading?
When you sign up, you receive a reading log. Make weekly reading goals and write them on this paper. As you achieve your goals, come to the Idaho Falls Public Library to claim prize coupons and Book Bucks.
Prize coupons come from local business sponsors. Use your Book Bucks to buy toys, candy, and books from the library’s summer reading store.
Keep Reading, All Summer Long …
If you keep reading all summer the number of Book Bucks you earn goes up! Here’s how it works:
- In weeks 1-3, you earn 5 Book Bucks for each goal you reach.
- In weeks 4-6, you earn 10 Book Bucks for each goal.
- In weeks 7-9, you earn 15 Book Bucks for each goal.
- And in week 10, you can earn 20 Book Bucks if you reach your final reading goal.
Plus, if you keep reading all summer, starting in August you can also earn entries for our grand prize drawings!
The library only gives prize coupons to kids, ages 2-12. Readers, you cannot claim extra prizes by reading ahead of your weekly goals. If your goals have been too easy and you’re finishing early, it’s time to set harder goals. Your parent or adult can help you revise your remaining goals. You can pick up your prizes weekly. If you miss a visit to the library, though, don’t worry. When you come again you can pick up anything you earned since your last visit. That said, prize coupons are available only while supplies last, so don’t wait until the end of summer to visit the library.

Teen Summer Reading
Teens! Sign up for the Idaho Falls Public Library’s 2017 Summer Reading program starting June 5, 2017. Sign up on the third floor of the library. Summer reading ends on August 25. The auction is August 26 at 6:00pm.
What is Summer Reading?
When you sign up for summer reading, you receive a reading log to track your reading. As you read and bring your log to the third floor summer reading desk, you earn Book Bucks. You can also earn Book Bucks when you write book reviews, explore different genres, volunteer at the library, and attend library programs (like Makerspaces or our Creative Writing Adventures for Teens summer camp).
You spend your Book Bucks at the teen-only auction on August 26. And, new this year, you can also spend Book Bucks at the library’s new Prizes on Demand store!
Keep Reading, All Summer Long …
If you keep reading throughout the summer, your Book Buck earning power increases:
- Read 5 books, earn 10 Book Bucks
- Reach 10 books and earn 20 more Book Bucks
- Reach 15 books and earn 30 more Book Bucks
- Reach 20 books and earn 40 more Book Bucks
- Reach 30 books and earn 50 more Book Bucks
- Reach 40 books and earn 60 more Book Bucks
That’s a total of 310 Book Bucks just for reading!
Double Your Book Bucks
On top of the Book Bucks you earn for reading, you can earn additional credits for:
- Visiting the library weekly (10 per visit, up to ten weeks)
- Exploring different genres while reading (10 per genre, up to 12 genres)
- Attending teen programs (5 per program)
- Volunteering at the library (1 per hour)
In the 2017 Summer Reading program you can easily earn about twice as many Book Bucks as in previous years.
Prizes on Demand Store
This year you don’t have to wait until the teen auction in August to spend your Book Bucks. The library will have a Prizes on Demand store on the third floor. Bring your reading passport—the booklet where you track your Book Buck totals—to the third floor and enjoy goodies and gadgets all summer long.
As in previous years, the Idaho Falls Public Library will host a teen auction on August 26 from 6:30-8:00pm on the north library lawn. Bid on the items that interest you and/or purchase left over prizes and goodies.
Teens, you may read whichever books you feel are appropriate for your age, reading level, and interests. That said, you can’t count magazines or newspapers. You also can’t count audiobooks unless you’re following along in the print version. The deadline to claim Book Bucks credits is August 25 at 6:00pm. Book Buck credits are not paper bills. They are credits recorded in your summer reading passport. The library can replace lost passports, but cannot restore Book Buck credits earned previously. If you lose your passport, you’ll have to start over, so don’t lose the passport! You cannot combine Book Buck credits with anyone else. The maximum bid on any single item at the auction is 400 Book Bucks. In the event of a tie bid on popular items (this is very common, by the way), winners will be chosen by drawing names. You can use anything you read for summer reading for Extreme Book Nerd challenge as long as it matches one of the categories.
If you have additional questions about our teen summer reading program, please call 208-612-8462.
