“My life has been richer for having known the fine young people who gave me the confidence to be better than I thought I could be.”
– Ella Mae Neuber

With these words, Ella Mae Neuber summarized her life as a teacher of history from 1927 to 1968 and as an active supporter of the Idaho Falls Public Library. “Miss Neuber,” as she was known to thousands of students, devoted her life to scholarship and the enlightenment of her students. A student recalled, “She possessed a wonderful grace as a person and as a teacher; she had us spellbound as she unraveled each day a portion of the story of history that she knew so well.” In 1962 Harvard University honored her with its Distinguished Teacher Award.

Mae Neuber saw the Idaho Falls Public Library as an essential part of the community’s life. She required her students to do reading and formal research at the Library. During her teaching career she served as a trustee on the Library Board. After her retirement from teaching, she gave many years of service to the Library as a volunteer. In 1986 she committed her entire estate to the establishment of the Mae Neuber Foundation Trust Fund. Her foundation provides money annually to enhance the Library’s services and collections. By the example she set, Miss Neuber inspires us to make our lives and our Library “better than we thought they could be.
